This castle still bears witness to the struggle between Henry VI
and Altavilla Family, which took place in 1193. Its imposing mass of the structure,
which underwent many changes, still brings out its importance in the past. It
was a former Lombard small fortalice, which first the Normans and then the
Angevins fortified and extended. D'Afflitto familiy gave the castle its present
look between 1500 and 1600. The last owners, the "Pignatelli della Leonessa",
commissioned the towers top crenellation at the beginning of the last century.
The castle nowadays is a municipal property, where the annual Eddie Lang Jazz
Festival takes place.
The square shaped castle defense system consists of four round
towers and a fortified wall, fitted with sloping towers. A small courtyard leads
into the castle. It is worth visiting an eighteenth century hall, with its
wooden beam ceiling composed of 190 distempered young oaktree planks.
